Well after over three months we finally made it to my favorite song of the decade and maybe my favorite song ever.

There are a lot of singers with great voices, exceptional voices even but often they don’t say much with those voices. It’s still impressive but it doesn’t have meaning.

Angel has something to say like on my # 39 song White Fire, and she doesn’t just have an amazing voice but she’s also an excellent musician as shown on my # 22 song Sister. She brings it all together on this masterpiece though. I can’t think of a better example of a song about social anxiety in existence.

Won’t you open a window sometime?
What’s so wrong with the light?
What’s so wrong with the light?
Wind in your hair, sun in your eyes
Light
Light
We throw our shadows down
We must throw our shadows down
We live and throw our shadows down
It’s how we get around
In the sun
In the sun
Why can’t you see?
Why can’t you see?
Why can’t you see?
Are you blind?
Are you blind?
Are you blind?
Are you dead already?
Are you alive?
Are you alive?
Won’t you open a window sometime?
Won’t you open a window sometime?
What’s so wrong with the light?
What’s so wrong with the light?
Wind in your hair, sun in your eyes
What’s so wrong with the light?
I believe the person she’s talking to is herself. She gets it too much to be otherwise. The “Why can’t you see” sounds so heartbreaking. She asks herself if it’s too late but maybe it’s not. The songs swells at the end, is she choosing to let the light in, to open herself up to the world?
I would put this on the golden record on the Voyager spacecraft if I could go back in time. It’s what I’d show an alien to demonstrate humanity. Even word, every quiver in her voice, every bit of accompaniment is absolutely perfect. This is top tier, count one hand, all time one of the best songs ever written by anyone bar none.
Thank you to anyone who read part of or all of my list. I’m just one person who probably missed something he’d love but I hope maybe I introduced a song or two to you that you might love.
