The young child watches her parents terrible relationship and thinks love is painful, violent, that it leaves you black but the real love here isn’t the abusive relationship between the parents it the one between mother and daughter as they are there for each other when their partners treat them poorly.
All this is delivered in the gritty real way Adrianne Lenker never sugarcoats the truth in her songs. You hear the emotion in her voice, nothing is contrived, she is real and the band is locked in behind her, brief breaking for an atonal guitar solo that somehow works beautifully before crashing back in together.
