Exhibt A in making the case for Courtney Bartnett as one of the top lyricist of the decade. Depreston is the story of the boring decision to move out to the suburbs turned into a mediation on our lives and what we leave behind when we’re gone. Courtney looks at a house on the market, the realtor makes an offhand comment that the house is a deceased estate and Courtney begins thinking about the person who had called it home, what their life was like. The unlikely emotional climax of the song another quip by the realtor who doesn’t realize they aren’t making the sale yet “if you’ve got a spare half million, you could knock it down and start rebuilding.”
