Perhaps Hop Along’s heaviest sounding song musically, Young and Happy! has the band bashing loose with something that sounds like steel drums in the background, which to date makes it the only song I’ve heard with that arrangement. Of course with any Hop Along song the biggest attraction is Francis Quinlan’s exceptional, possibly vocal chord damaging singing. Her lyrics are usually abstract but with her voice she makes you feel every word. You feel the emotion in the chorus line, “At least with you I got to be young and happy” even if you were never young and happy with anyone.
